MHTS and Rite Aid are proud to salute the latest in our series of Hometown Heroes. For the month of June we honor The Mohawk Valley 12U Lady Pirates girls softball team.
The Lady Pirates are comprised of girls from New Hartford, Whitesboro, Utica, Herkimer, Sauquoit and Holland Patent. The team is coached by Pete Acquaviva and Frank Curriere.
The Mohawk Valley Lady Pirates placed third inthe Horseheads 12U summer blast softball tournament June 19th & 20th.
Twelve teams participated from all over the state. It was the girls first tournament and was very competitive. The teams from the southern tier of NYS are very dominant in softball so third place is a big victory for the girls.
In their first game on Saturday, June 19 the Pirates played the eventual champs the Elmira Lady Rebels, and lost 13-3. The Pirates were led offensively by Emily Aquaviva, who had two hits and was the player of the game for the Pirates.
In the second game of the day the Lady Pirates played the Horseheads White team and won 11-1. Aquaviva led the way offensively again as she talliedthree hits, Marlena Irizarry, Mary Kate Alessandrini, Lauren Sleezer, Abby Smith and Jenna Mazza had one hit a piece.
Leah Harter pitched five stronginnings allowing only one hit, striking out six and walking one. Abby Smith received player of the game honors.
In the nightcap, the Lady Pirates were victoroius once again as they defeated the Bath All-Stars 9-1.
Mary Kate Alessandrini led the way with 2hits, and Courtney Mourton, Irizarry, Aquaviva, Dana DelGenio, LaurenSleezer and Jenna Mazza had a hit a piece. Ashley Robinson pitched all seven
innings, as she struck out eleven and walked four and recieved player ofthe game honors.
The Pirates ended day one of the tournament 2-1 and received the 4 seed for the single elimination tournament that began on Sunday.
In the first round on Sunday, the Pirates faced the BAGSAI Bad Apples and won a tight game, 8-7 in the seventh inning.
