WARRIORS PROTECT HOME TURF WIN 6TH ANNUAL WARRIORS CLASSIC 05/09/10
ELEVEN TEAMS COMPETE AT HIDDEN VALLEY-NEW HARTFORD'S DEREK BARD FIRES A 71
JEFF PEXTON/PHOTOS JEFF PEXTON
The Whitesboro Warriors golf team invited eleven other local teams, from all across Section III, to take part in the prestigious 6th Annual Warriors Classic at their home course, Hidden Valley Golf Club in Whitesboro. As always, the course was in perfect condition to host the best of the best in area high school golf.

Speaking of the best, New Hartford's young gun Derek Bard was on top of his game, as usual, firing a 71 to lead everyone home.

Coach Eugene Kaczor and his unbeaten Warriors were rude hosts, as they pulled away for a 15 stroke lead over Clinton for a tourney winning score of 399. The other Warriors ended up with a combined score of 414.

(Whitesboro's Joel Jakubowicz uses a little body English as he tries to coax in a birdie putt on the 2nd hole.)

Clinton coach Bill Owens should be happy with the way his Warriors battled the solid field. The Warriors are on the move and improving as the season moves on with a record of (7-4).

Clinton fought all day to hoist the hardware, but came up short down the stretch to finish in second. Leading the way for Clinton was Tim Waters with a more than respectable 79. The 79 shot by Waters was good enough for a 5th place finish on the individual honors leaderboard.

(New Hartford's Byrom Thompson watches his second shot fly out of trouble on the 8th hole. Thompson's shot was a great one and he was able to save par.)

Garrett Drejza ended up right behind Waters with an 81 and Peter Hagstrom was one shot behind at 82.

New Hartford's Spartans ended up just four strokes behind in third as young mister Bard led his team home. Bard, just a freshmen, took individual medalist honors ripping off his 18 hole total of 71 on a less than perfect, unpredictable day.

The ever shifting winds made today's tourney a wild and woolly affair, but the eleven teams seemed to enjoy the challenge.

Bard who is, if anything, a very consistent golfer, shot a 35 on the front 9 and wound his way home with a 36 to end the day at 71.

With Bard winning the individual honors, the New Hartford Spartans reminded Whitesboro (13-0) that they would still be a factor in the TVL and Section III before the season winds down.

(Clinton's Tim Waters gets up and down in a hurry on the 9th green.)

New Hartford (10-1)was the Warrior Classic defending champ and did not go down without a fight. Along with Bard, Kyle Critelli carded and 81 and Byrom Thompson carded a 90 for the Spartans.

Speaking of freshmen, the winning Warriors have a pretty good one of their own in Joel Jakubowicz who finished just 3 shots behind Bard, at 74. Jakubowicz started with a 36 and then a 38 to end up his day.

Whitesboro teammate Bradee Holtslag ended up in third on the individual leader board with a 77. Holtslag started out hot with a front 9, 36, and come around the backside with a 41.

(Remsen's Nick Spine lets the fur fly on the 8th fairway as his approach shot heads for  paydirt.)

Remsen, the other local team in the field, ended up in 11th with a 462. The Rams were led by Keith Smith who fired a 38 on the back 9 to come home with a team best 79.

Other top Rams were Ralph Halwig who carded an 87 and Travis Wilder who signed his card after a round of 91.

The 6495 yard, 18 hole course, played well despite the windy conditions and coaches and fans alike were thrilled that the tee times were early enough to beat the impending inclement weather that hit the Mohawk Valley around midday.

(Clinton's Devin Grabski nails his tee shot on the 9th hole.)
